Cor Vasa 2007, 49(3):88-91 | DOI: 10.33678/cor.2007.035

Introduction:The morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular disease are high in developed countries. Lifestyle modification is capable of reducing cardiovascular disease-related morbidity and mortality by 50%. Aim:The aim of the present study was to measure the parameters of some risk factors before and after one-week recon-ditioning and rehabilitation programs without stress, with low-fat, low-energy lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet and exercise. These programs were run for a total of 25 weeks from 1999 through 2005. Methods:A total of 1,065 volunteers (272 men, 893 women), with a mean age of 50.8 - 14 years, took...

The neurocardiogenic response during the head-up tilt test in patients with permanent atrial fibrillation

Cor Vasa 2007, 49(3):92-94 | DOI: 10.33678/cor.2007.036

Introduction:Syncope is a relatively serious symptom in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Aside from arrhythmic syncopes, there are neurocardiogenic syncopes (NCSs), based on the autonomic nervous system s reflex mechanism, in patients with AF. The hemodynamic consequences of AF affect the function of the autonomic nervous system. As a result, patients with AF may be at higher risk of developing NCS. No data is available on the incidence of NCS in patients with permanent AF. Aim:To evaluate the NCS response during the head-up tilt test in patients with permanent AF. Method:Forty-eight patients (19 women,...

Quantitative description of atherosclerotic lesions in optical microscopy

Zbyněk Tonar, Jiří Janáček, Rudolf Poledne

Cor Vasa 2007, 49(3):95-101 | DOI: 10.33678/cor.2007.037

The aim of this paper is to review current methods available for quantitative morphometry of lesions in blood vessels as well as to discuss their applicability for assessing the vulnerability of vascular lesions. The principles of stereological estimation of the length, surface, volume, numerical density, cluster analysis, microvessel density, and relative labeling index are explained. The key rules of unbiased sampling in histology and designing a morphometric study are discussed. The distribution of the overall observed variance in a typical biological experiment is reviewed, and a comparison of some image processing vs. stereological methods is...

Catheter-based treatment of a complex post-infarction recanalized interventricular septal defect

Cor Vasa 2007, 49(3):102-104 | DOI: 10.33678/cor.2007.038

Almost as a rule, interventricular septal defect poses a fatal complication during the course of acute myocardial infarction. In the acute phase, it is managed by surgery; related problems include timing of the procedure, high perioperative mortality, and the risk of defect recanalization. We present the case report of a 55-year-old man with his first myocardial infarction in the presence of single-vessel disease, complicated by interventricular septal rupture. Successful acute surgery was followed by early recanalization of the defect with subsequent re-do surgery at 8 years; however, defect recanalization through a long channel recurred. Our case...

Catheter-based management of a carotid artery injury by stent-graft implantation

Cor Vasa 2007, 49(3):105-107 | DOI: 10.33678/cor.2007.039

We report the case of a patient with iatrogenic injury to a carotid artery caused by central venous system cannulation, the diagnostic procedures and subsequent successful endovascular treatment by stent-graft implantation.

Levosimendan-revised indications and posology

Jindřich Špinar, Jiří Vítovec

Cor Vasa 2007, 49(3):108-110

Acute heart failure is a very common emergency. This syndrome encompasses at least four diagnostic entities: cardiogenic shock, pulmonary edema, hypertensive crisis, and acute exacerbation of heart failure. The new recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of acute heart failure developed by the European Society of Cardiology and by the Czech Society of Cardiology have included levosimendan as an option. However, large clinical trials have led to a revision of the main indications for and posology of this drug. The main indication is currently decompensation of the patient with chronic heart failure, treated with beta-blockers, which are not...
