The utilization of cardiopulmonary exercise testing in cardiology
- I. interní klinika, Fakultní nemocnice Olomouc a Lékařská fakulta Univerzity Palackého, Olomouc, Česká republika
Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (spiroergometry) provides a comprehensive perspective of exercise physiology and pathophysiology. The article summarizes indications and overviews current knowledge and evidence concerning clinical use of the method in practical cardiology. Attention is given to results that can be used to establish the prognosis of and to treatment in patients with heart failure and, in the second part, to the contribution of the method to the differential diagnosis of dyspnea. The described principle of the determination of ventilatory limitation under maximum load suggests the position of the method in the diagnostic algorithm for dyspnea and its limitations.
