Cor Vasa 2007, 49(6):213-215 | DOI: 10.33678/cor.2007.078

Introduction:Ghrelin is an endogenous hormone expressed predominantly in the stomach. Ghrelin controls growth hormone secretion and also affects the body s energy balance. We have analyzed the association of ghrelin variants with body weight changes after dietary/exercise intervention in healthy overweight females. Methods:Ghrelin variants Arg51 > Gln, Leu72 > Met and Gln90 > Leu were analyzed by PCR-RFLP in 80 overweight (BMI 31.1 ± 3.0 kg/m2) females aged 25-55 years. Development of body weight and plasma lipids were analyzed in subgroups divided according to ghrelin genotypes. Results:Carriers...

Cor Vasa 2007, 49(6):216-221 | DOI: 10.33678/cor.2007.079

Aim:The aim of the study was to assess the intraoperative flow rates in the arterial Y graft used for revascularization of the left coronary artery region and to compare them with the flow rates obtained by conventional revascularization using the left internal thoracic artery (LITA) and vein grafts. Methods:Three hundred patients were divided into two groups: Group A undergoing arterial revascularization with both internal thoracic arteries used as a Y graft, and Group B undergoing conventional revascularization using the LITA attached to the left anterior descending artery (LAD) and venous grafts to the other branches of...

Combination therapy using inhaled iloprost and sildenafil in a patient with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension

Hikmet Al-Hiti, Jiří Kettner, Jiří Widimský, Josef Kautzner

Cor Vasa 2007, 49(6):222-224 | DOI: 10.33678/cor.2007.080

The authors provide a brief overview of the therapeutic options in idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH), and present the case report of a patient with moderate IPAH, in whom the above therapeutic strategy was employed for the first time in the Czech Republic.

Aortic valve papillary fibroelastoma

Martin Troubil, Petr Němec, Petr Šantavý, Tomáš Tichý, Jiří Střelec

Cor Vasa 2007, 49(6):226-228 | DOI: 10.33678/cor.2007.081

Papillary fibroelastoma is the second most frequent primary cardiac tumor; despite its benign nature, it may be the source of serious, life-threatening embolic events. The rates of detection of this tumor increase with the increasing availability of echocardiography. The authors report the case of aortic valve papillary fibroelastoma in an asymptomatic female patient, which was managed by valve-sparing surgery.

Genetics in cardiology. Part II. Basic notions in genetics, methods of examination, types of heredity, chromosomal aberrations, genetics of congenital heart disease

Ilga Grochová, Ladislav Groch, Diana Grochová

Cor Vasa 2007, 49(6):229-236 | DOI: 10.33678/cor.2007.082

In Part II of their series Genetics in cardiology, the authors provide definitions of basic notions in genetics the gene, allele, locus, homozygote, and heterozygote. The genome including the mitochondrial one, the genotype, and phenotype are discussed. The section covering alterations in the genetic material explains the terms aberration and mutation. Monogenic and polygenic diseases are described. The section addressing methods of examination in genetics briefly defines cytogenetic and molecular genetic methods of diagnosis. This is followed by a section covering genetics of congenital heart disease, with examples of chromosomal aberrations resulting...
