Aim:The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of intracoronary autologous mononuclear bone marrow (MBM) cell transplantation in patients with chronic myocardial infarction (MI). Methods:Of the first 31 patients treated with intracoronary autologous MBM cell transplantation in the acute phase of MI, 13 exhibited functional improvement (but not normalization of wall motion) at a 3-month follow-up visit and agreed with repeat cell transplantation. They were randomized to either repeat MBM cell transplantation (n = 7) or to a 3-month control group (n = 6). Results:Three adverse effects occurred...

Aim:The purpose of this study was to determine how Type 2 diabetes affects parameters of high-resolution electrocardiography of the P wave and some echocardiographic parameters associated with the risk for atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods:Signal averaged ECG of the P wave and transthoracic echocardiography were performed in 66 patients. Patients were divided into 3 groups: group A - patients with paroxysmal AF (n = 25), group B - patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension, but without atrial fibrillation (n = 25), and group C - healthy control subjects (n = 16). Cardiac autonomic neuropathy of diabetic...

Induction of therapeutic mild hypothermia in cardiac arrest survivors has been the only method significantly improving the neurological outcome and likely to reduce mortality. Therefore, intensive care units caring for patients after cardiac arrest should become familiar with the use of this method. The authors propose a protocol of therapeutic mild hypothermia to be used after cardiac arrest. The protocol is based on literary data and the authors own experience with the method.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia in the population, and its prevalence continues to rise. As pharmacological therapy of atrial fibrillation has proved to be fairly ineffective, the last decade has witnessed an explosion of non-pharmacological therapeutic options. These include, in particular, catheter ablation and cardiac surgical interventions considered to be the most effective procedures, especially when used to reverse chronic atrial fibrillation. A variety of surgical modifications have been developed over time allowing to retain the high efficacy of the procedure while reducing operative time and the risk. The paper is the...
Current potential applications of robotic surgical systems in vascular surgery

Initially developed to meet the needs of the US Army, robotic systems have been employed for nonmilitary purposes since 2000. While robotics is quite commonly used in various branches of surgery, its application in vascular surgery is still in its infancy. The utilization of a robotic surgical system for vascular surgical procedures at the Prague-based Na Homolce Hospital currently represents a unique application of such a device in this area. A total of 50 robot-assisted reconstructive procedures in the aortoiliac region were performed there from November 2005 through December 2006. All these procedures were undertaken using a combination of conventional...
