Background/aims:Experiments in stem cell treatment of myocardial infarction (MI) require a model with ideally ischemic lesion and intravascular application of cells. The goal of our trial was to induce sub-lethal MI in rabbit to prove the ability of iron labeled mononuclear cells (IL-MNC) from bone marrow to migrate into the injured myocardium and to evaluate the short-term distribution of intravascularly administered cells in the damaged left ventricle. Material and methods:Sub-lethal MI was induced successfully in 14 rabbits using 18-hour ligation of diagonal branches of the left anterior descending coronary artery (in vivo...

Background:Renal disorders with impaired renal functions are considered a significant risk factor for increased mortality. Methods:In a cross-sectional retrospective study, a total of 974 individuals (506 men, 468 women) were examined and their serum creatinine and cystatin C levels were analyzed in 1997. Follow-up was 8 years with death as the end point. Results:Serum cystatin C values did not differ between men and women (medians 1.28 vs. 1.27 mg/l; p = 0.9). Serum cystatin C values correlated with age (r = 0.37; p < 0.01). Two hundred and sixty subjects died during follow-up. The mediancystatin C level...

Hypertension and coronary heart disease. Is there a J-curve for diastolic blood pressure?
Jiří Widimský
Cor Vasa 2006, 48(10):345-350 | DOI: 10.33678/cor.2006.112
While some studies pointed to the possible existence of a J curve of diastolic blood pressure, other studies did not confirm such a relationship.A recent retrospective analysis of INVEST involving 22,576 patients with hypertension and coronary heart disease has shown the risk of the primary endpoint had had a J-curve relationship with diastolic blood pressure (BP) peaking at a BP of 119/84 mmHg. A J-curve relationship was particularly obvious between diastolic BP and the risk of fatal and nonfatal myocardial infarction. A J-curve relationship for the risk for fatal and non-fatal stroke was only suggested. Compared with the incidence of myocardial...

We report three cases of spontaneous coronary artery dissection with different courses and therapy. Optimal treatment depends on the site of dissection, number of affected vessels, coronary blood flow, and hemodynamic state of the patient.Discussion summarizes the current concept of etiopathogenesis and therapy of spontaneous coronary dissection.

Liver test abnormalities have a prognostic value in patients with chronic heart failure. While the diagnosis of liver damage is based on data from laboratory investigations, routine biochemistry is not sensitive enough to assess the complex processes occurring in hepatocytes. In hepatology, the methacetin breath test is used for exact measurement of microsomal hepatocyte function. No systematic study of metabolic liver function has been conducted to date in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). A pilot study of patients with systolic heart failure showed significantly impaired metabolic liver function in patients with uncontrolled chronic heart...
