Intervention of the risk factors of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular mortality. A 20-year primary prevention study from a statistician's point of view

Jindra Reissigová, Marie Tomečková

Cor Vasa 2003, 44(5):249-255

Aims:To evaluate intervention of the risk factors of atherosclerosis (ARF) in relation to mortality from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) in a 20-year primary prevention multifactorial study, conducted by workers of the Department of Internal Medicine II, General University Hospital in Prague 2, and to point to methodological problems associated with this longitudinal study. Patients and methods:Entry examination in the years 1975-1979 was performed in 59.8% (1,417) of the 2,370 invited middle-aged men resident in Prague 2. Overall, 859 men were included into a risk group (RG) randomly divided into an intervened...

Tissue Doppler imaging II. Tissue tracking-a method for semiquantitative evaluation of myocardial kinetics

Eva Mandysová, Pavel Henyš, Petr Niederle

Cor Vasa 2003, 44(5):257-261

Tissue Doppler represents one of the main areas of research in echocardiography. It is capable of registering regional myocardial velocities with high time resolution (frame rate of up to 250 Hz) making it easy to study changes in regional myocardial kinetics to an extent which to date has not been available using current noninvasive imaging techniques. It is evident that the derived parameters (tissue tracking, strain, strain rate) will have a greater impact on clinical practice than single evaluation of myocardial velocities. One of these parameters-tissue tracking-is a new modality of presenting tissue Doppler data sets. Different coloration...

What should the cardiologist know about erectile dysfunction?

Václav Chaloupka

Cor Vasa 2003, 44(5):263-268

Erectile dysfunction (ED), defined as an inability to achieve or maintain erection sufficient for a satisfactory sexual intercourse, occurs in more than 30% of men aged 40-70 years. ED is more frequent in patients with coronary heart disease than in the general population. It is estimated that ED afflicts over 150 million men worldwide, with the figure expected to rise to more than 300 million men by the year 2025. The etiology of ED is most often vascular, so its association with coronary heart disease is fairly close. The incidence of both conditions rises with age and both conditions have common risk factors. In general, the risk of serious cardiovascular...

The evolution of knowledge about the pulmonary circulation II. Twentieth century

Martin Riedel

Cor Vasa 2003, 44(5):269-274

This review describes briefly and with admitted biases the progress achieved in the first half of the 20th century in our understanding of the structure and function of the pulmonary circulation. The technical developments have been truly remarkable and match the maturity of both cardiology and pneumology as independent specialties of internal medicine. Both specialties meet again in the field of pulmonary circulation. The pulmonary circulation is now known to be more than a passive system of pipes, and something is understood of the factors regulating it in health and disease. Real progress has been made in understanding the diseases of the pulmonary...

Surgical management of descending aorta aneurysm after the Vossschulte procedure

Jaroslav Benedík, Jiří Široký, Josef Frdlík, Karina Labajová, Tomáš Hájek, František Šlauf

Cor Vasa 2003, 44(5):281-283

The case report describes successful surgical management-using the Vossschulte procedure-of a descending aorta (DA) aneurysm developing after surgical correction of childhood coarctation of the aorta. A part of the DA was replaced by a prosthesis. The spinal cord and abdominal cavity organs were protected using femoro-femoral extracorporeal circulation. The postoperative course was absolutely uneventful, and the patient was discharged, in good condition, on postoperative day 9 to receive home care.
