Three-dimensional echocardiography was developed from the post-war one-dimensional ultrasound imaging to the current routinely used method just during the last several years. Real-time 3D echocardiography has become standard high-end machine equipment. There is a vast amount of publications on its asset emerging in the literature. This article describes the role of 3D echocardiography in atrial pathology assessment - the detection of left atrial appendage thrombi or other intraatrial masses or description of septal defects, and the role of 3D echo in guiding intracardiac interventions. State-of-the-art summary and comments on own results and experience is presented.
