PET/CT in cardiology

PET/CT is a recent noninvasive imaging technique which put together two sophisticated techniques into one device. It provides two basic types of information about the structure and function of the human body which complement each other not only on the level of technology but also biology. PET/CT serves partly in clinical practice mainly in the work-up of patients with ischemic heart disease, and partly in experiment, particularly in the area of molecular biology. This article briefly describes the principle of both techniques and explains the complementary role in the evaluation of myocardial perfusion and metabolism. Its potential uses in the near future is shortly described.
