Percutaneous catheter-based aortic valve implantation
- Kardiocentrum, Nemocnice Podlesí, a. s., Třinec, Česká republika
Aortic valve disease is the third most common cardiovascular disease and, also, the most frequent valve disease treated surgically in adulthood in the industrialized nations. The gold standard of treatment of symptomatic severe aortic stenosis is surgical aortic valve replacement. Since 2002, when the first catheter-based implantation of a prosthetic valve into the aortic position was performed, there has been rapid evolution of percutaneous valve implantation procedures. The paper summarizes basic information about the current status of various techniques of catheter-based prosthetic valve implantation procedures. A summary of knowledge regarding indications and selection of patients for percutaneous aortic valve implantation is also provided as is a section discussing the future of therapeutic strategies for the treatment of aortic stenosis.
