Introduction:
The authors present a summary of hypertension control and treatment in patients on discharge from a department of internal medicine.
Group and method:
The medical records of patients on their discharge from St Anna's University Hospital Department of Internal Medicine II in Brno were reviewed.
There were 2,371 cases of primary hospitalization, with hypertension diagnosed in 59.6% and referred to as the most frequent accompanying diagnosis, followed by coronary heart disease. The mean age of patients was 71 years, and the most frequent form of hypertension was isolated systolic hypertension, present in 34.1%.
Discussion:
On discharge, monotherapy was used by one third of hypertensives, with the most frequent class of drugs prescribed for antihypertensive monotherapy being ACE inhibitors (32.6%). Combination therapy was used by two thirds of hypertensives, with ACE inhibitors again being the most often used agents. More than 40% of patients had a blood pressure 3 140/90 mm Hg on discharge.
Conclusion:
The most frequently prescribed antihypertensive drugs on discharge from hospital are ACE inhibitors; hypertension control on discharge is not satisfactory.
