Successful use of inhaled NO in the treatment of acute right ventricular failure
- Oddelenie anesteziológie a intenzívnej medicíny, Národný ústav srdcových a cievnych chorôb, Bratislava, Slovenská republika
Under physiological conditions, the right ventricle does not have to overcome any resistance and any sudden rise in the pulmonary arterial bed may result in its failure with subsequent circulatory collapse. Our case report describes effective management of a shock state in the presence of right ventricular failure using inhaled NO, which selectively dilates the pulmonary bed arteries without an effect on the systemic circulation. In addition, the case report briefly addresses the differential diagnosis of right ventricular failure and other potential therapeutic uses of inhaled NO.
