In heart failure, ventricular cardiomyocytes respond to increased wall tension by increased brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) production. Consequently, measurement of plasma BNP levels has been identified by the European Society of Cardiology guidelines as a major tool used to diagnose heart failure. However, cardiomyocyte overload may also result from a simple rise in blood pressure (BP). The problem is that the currently available data on increased BNP production by a heart coping with high BP are not fully consistent. Aim of study:To study the effect of high BP on plasma BNP levels, to establish a correlation between BNP levels and...

Aim:To test the benefits of intraoperative echocardiography (IOE) in children undergoing surgery for congenital heart defect (CHD). Method:A retrospective study of 2,324 patients operated off-pump for CHD in the Pediatric Heart Center from October 1994 (introduction of IOE) through 2003. IOE was performed in 350 (15%) at the request of the surgeon. We compared the results of preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative echocardiography using our pre-defined semiquantitative criteria. Results:IOE was most often requested by the surgeon in patients with atrioventricular (22.6%) and ventricular septal defects...

Acute coronary syndromes in women.

Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death in women. In contrast to men, cardiovascular mortality of females has been on the rise. However, the female gender is not an independent risk factor for death from acute coronary syndrome. We therefore thought it might be interesting to identify differences between males and females with acute coronary syndrome. The survey was designed to identify modifiable factors deteriorating the prognosis of females. Compared with males, females with acute coronary syndromes are older, have more cardiovascular risk factors and associated conditions. Females tend to seek health care later than males. It is more...

Are rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune rheumatic diseases a risk factor for atherosclerosis?

Jan Piťha, Radim Bečvář, Štefan Alušík

Cor Vasa 2006, 48(2):68-71 | DOI: 10.33678/cor.2006.024

Atherosclerosis is defined as an inflammatory disease. The main risk factor triggering the process is a high level of LDL particles and their subsequent modification in the vessel wall. A most important role is subsequently played by the cellular and hormonal components of the immune system; they may become the key factor in the process of atherosclerosis, e. g., in autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and other conditions. These conditions have been shown to be as-sociated with an increased incidence of clinical cardiovascular events and pre-clinical atherosclerosis. The favorable effect on conventional risk factors of atherosclerosis...
