Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia in the population, and its prevalence continues to rise. As pharmacological therapy of atrial fibrillation has proved to be fairly ineffective, the last decade has witnessed an explosion of non-pharmacological therapeutic options. These include, in particular, catheter ablation and cardiac surgical interventions considered to be the most effective procedures, especially when used to reverse chronic atrial fibrillation. A variety of surgical modifications have been developed over time allowing to retain the high efficacy of the procedure while reducing operative time and the risk.
The paper is the first summary of outcomes of surgical management of patients with atrial fibrillation as reported by cardiac surgical centers across the Czech Republic.
