The evolution of knowledge about the pulmonary circulation II. Twentieth century
- Deutsches Herzzentrum und I. Medizinische Klinik, Technische Universität München, Německo
This review describes briefly and with admitted biases the progress achieved in the first half of the 20th century in our understanding of the structure and function of the pulmonary circulation. The technical developments have been truly remarkable and match the maturity of both cardiology and pneumology as independent specialties of internal medicine. Both specialties meet again in the field of pulmonary circulation. The pulmonary circulation is now known to be more than a passive system of pipes, and something is understood of the factors regulating it in health and disease. Real progress has been made in understanding the diseases of the pulmonary circulation and in learning to treat them. The accomplishments are impressive, particularly when seen in historical context.
