Introduction:Acute heart failure is a disease associated with high mortality rates, difficult to diagnose and treat. Aim:To describe the incidence of acute heart failure in departments of cardiology with cath labs. Methods:A database of acute heart failure patients hospitalized in specialist departments of cardiology was launched as part of a research project in 2005 at the Department of Medicine/Cardiology of Brno Teaching Hospital and has continued to be run as a prospective database called AHEAD (Acute HEArt failure Database) in three other departments (Department of Cardiology, IKEM Prague; Department of...

Cor Vasa 2008, 50(1):23-27 | DOI: 10.33678/cor.2008.013

Aim:The aim of the study was to analyze the annual costs of conventional therapy per patient with atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods:The healthcare data of patients were obtained using a questionnaire distributed to cardiologists across the Czech Republic. The study included 306 patients (94 women) with a mean age of 63.7 ± 11.4 years, with a confirmed diagnosis of AF, receiving standard cardiologist-guided therapy, who had not have catheter-based ablation. Costs were analyzed in terms of the healthcare cost payer. Total costs of treatment of AF patients were calculated as the sums spent on diagnostic and therapeutic...

Speckle tracking echocardiography - a new tool for quantification of myocardial function

Cor Vasa 2008, 50(1):28-33 | DOI: 10.33678/cor.2008.014

The aim of this paper is to provide a summary of the current knowledge of a new echocardiographic method - speckle tracking echocardiography. Speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) allows frame-to-frame tracking of acoustic markers (speckles) in 2-dimensional echocardiographic images. Based on relative changes in speckle position, the method enables simultaneous quantification of myocardial deformation in 2 dimensions. Such speckle tracking is direction-independent. Using various echocardiographic views, STE allows quantifying longitudinal, circumferential, and radial strain, and strain rate in all myocardial segments. In addition, the method can...

Surgical management of coarctation of the aorta is usually undertaken in childhood. This condition is encountered rarely in adults. An option for managing complicated coarctation of the aorta or coarctation combined with cardiac surgery is to establish extra-anatomical bypass from sternotomy. The authors report two cases of bypass from the ascending to descending aortas to manage coarctation of the aorta. The procedure was successful, with no complications in both cases.

Successful catheter-based management of iatrogenic left main coronary artery stenosis following aortic valve replacement

Cor Vasa 2008, 50(1):39-42 | DOI: 10.33678/cor.2008.016

The paper is the case report of a 74-year female patient with critical ostial left main coronary artery stenosis as a complication of a repeat procedure on the aortic valve. The likely cause seemed to be antegrade blood cardioplegia, scarring due to injury to the coronary arteries and aortic root, or a combination of both. Four months after, the complication manifested by unstable angina and was successfully managed by percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty combined with metalic stent implantation. Iatrogenic stenosis of the left main coronary artery is a very rare, yet potentially fatal, complication of aortic valve replacement. The dominant...

Robotized techniques - a new platform for interventional cardiology

Petr Neužil, Miloš Táborský

Cor Vasa 2008, 50(1):43-46

New directions in the development in catheter-based techniques used in interventional cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology are closely related to the dynamic development of novel imaging techniques and, also, various concepts of remote-navigation systems designed for heart catheterization so as to make catheter-based interventions more accurate and as safe as possible for the patient. Last but not least, these techniques should usher in standardization and reduce inter-individual variability in catheter-based interventions. Our paper introduces revolutionary robotized techniques of heart catheterization based on the principle of electromagnetic...
